Baptism in the Holy Spirit

Now that you are a Christian

Introduction

Every Christian needs to be filled with the Holy Spirit.

Acts 19:2-6 (NIV) 2 and (Paul) asked them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.” 3 So Paul asked, “Then what baptism did you receive?” “John’s baptism,” they replied. 4 Paul said, “John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5 On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 6 When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied.

To get the most out of this study, please follow these suggestions:

What Is Baptism Of The Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is the Advocate, Helper, and Comforter promised by Jesus.

John 14:16 (ESV) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever,

John 14:16 (NIV) And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever—

John 14:16 (KJV)  And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever;

Baptism is the third role of the Holy Spirit. The first role is to convict us of our sins and to bring us to Jesus for Salvation. The second role is to dwell in us when we get saved and to teach us about our journey with Jesus. The third role is to endow us with power for ministry (Acts 1:8). Many Christians receive the first two but fail to receive the third (Acts 19:2-6).

Acts 1:8 (NIV) But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Baptism in the Holy Spirit is an immersion (baptism) in the Holy Spirit’s presence, during which the believer is saturated with the Holy Spirit's love, power, and gifts (Acts 1:8). The Holy Spirit's love, power, and gifts are given to equip God’s children for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up.

Ephesians 4:12-13 (NIV) to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

This is not the gift of tongues and interpretation used to build up the body of Christ but the gift of tongues to build up the individual Christian.
